New Year, New Adventures
As we step into a new year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on what truly matters and set goals for the months ahead. For many of us, quality family time tops the list. Living in Cornwall offers plenty of opportunities to strengthen bonds, create memories, and embrace the joys of family life.
Here are some simple, family-friendly New Year Goals to help you make the most of your time together.
1. Explore the Outdoors
Cornwall’s natural beauty makes it easy to embrace outdoor adventures. Make a “12 Month Bucket list” to visit a new beach, coastal path, or nature reserve every month. From the rugged cliffs of Bedruthan Steps to the magic of the Eden Project, there’s no shortage of places to explore. Pack a picnic, lace up your walking shoes, and get exploring the inspiring Cornish landscapes for your family outings.
Our Top Tip: One of our personal favourite days out is Lappa Valley Railway, with plenty for kid of all ages to do, including the impressive Engine Shed soft play area; this one is our go-to for weekend fun all year round. They now offer an annual pass via monthly direct-debit, which makes it even easier.
2. Plan Screen-Free Days
It’s easy for screens to take up more of our attention than intended. Dedicate one day each week to unplugging as a family. Spend the day baking Cornish pasties together, working on puzzles, or playing board games. These small shifts can lead to big changes in how you connect with one another.
Our Top Tip: One of our favourites is baking together as family, especially cupcakes and Banana Bread. Our son is only young, so sometimes we have to embrace the mess!
3. Learn Something New Together
Cornwall offers plenty of workshops and classes that cater to all ages. Why not try a family surf lesson in Newquay or a pottery workshop at a local studio? Learning something new together can strengthen family bonds and create shared memories.
Our Top Tip: Many places offer family-friendly workshops, from pottery in St Ives to wildlife spotting tours around Falmouth. If you have younger children, everything is new and exciting, so you don’t always have to spend money. Bug hunts, bird spotting or berry picking can lead to new learning opportunities at your nearest woodland or park.
4. Support Local Businesses
Make a resolution to explore Cornwall’s vibrant local markets, farm shops, and small businesses. Involve the kids in choosing fresh ingredients for meals or picking out handmade gifts. Supporting local not only boosts the community but also teaches children the value of sustainable choices.
Our Top Tip: Plan a visit to Truro Farmer’s Market, open every Wednesday and Saturday, and let the kids pick ingredients for a homemade Cornish pasty night.
5. Volunteer as a Family
Giving back is a wonderful way to spend time together and teach children about kindness. Whether it’s a beach clean-up, helping out at a community event, or donating to a food bank, Cornwall offers plenty of opportunities to make a positive impact.
Our Top Tip: Check out Surfers Against Sewage for family-friendly beach clean-up events near you or visit the Volunteer Cornwall website for other opportunities.
6. Prioritise Family Meals
With busy work and school schedules, sitting down for meals as a family can be a challenge. Make it a priority to eat together whenever possible. Whether it’s a hearty Cornish breakfast or a Sunday roast for the whole family, these moments can be a great time to reconnect.
Our Top Tip: Make it easy, try meal prepping together on weekends or keeping a list of quick, go-to recipes. Even a 20-minute meal can feel special when shared.
7. Capture the Little Moments
Sometimes, the simplest moments become the most cherished memories. Start a family journal to document your year. Jot down funny conversations, day trip highlights, or small wins. By the end of the year, you’ll have a treasure trove of moments to look back on.
Our Top Tip: Include entrance tickets, photos and little mementos from your Cornish explorations. And dad… don’t forget to take photos of mum with the kids. She will probably protest, but she will thank you when you look back at your year together.
Family Time in 2025
The start of a new year is a fresh slate, full of opportunities to prioritise what matters most. By setting simple and meaningful goals, your family can create a year filled with connection, joy, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty and culture of Cornwall.
Here’s to a year of family adventures and making every moment count. Happy New Year!
